TAG Heuer has given its racing chronograph a serious rethink. The new Carrera Chronograph Sport launched this autumn in Madrid, around the 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, where TAG Heuer is title partner and official timekeeper of Formula 1. It's smaller, slimmer and easier to read than the model it replaces, and it's a good moment to look back at where the Carrera came from, and at the vintage TAG Heuer and Swiss pieces in our vault.

A Name Born at the Racetrack
The Carrera story starts in January 1962 at the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida, where Heuer was supplying timing equipment. In the pits, Jack Heuer got talking to the parents of racing drivers Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, who told him about the Carrera Panamericana, a dangerous border-to-border road race run across Mexico in the early 1950s. Jack loved the word, which means "race", "road" and "career" in Spanish, and registered the name as soon as he got home.
The first Heuer Carrera chronograph appeared at the Basel watch fair in 1963. Jack designed it himself around one idea: a clean dial that a driver could read in a glance. The seconds scale moved off the dial onto an inner ring, leaving just the counters and applied markers. In March 1969, the Carrera was one of Heuer's first automatic chronographs, alongside the Autavia and the Monaco.
What's New in the Carrera Chronograph Sport
The biggest change is size. The case drops from 44mm to 42mm, the lug-to-lug shrinks from 49.8mm to 48.6mm, and thickness falls from 15.48mm to about 14.2mm, so it should sit far more comfortably on most wrists. The steel case mixes brushed and polished surfaces, and the fixed tachymeter bezel now has a ceramic insert held in a visible steel cradle.
On the dial, applied Arabic numerals replace the old baton markers, which fits that original 1963 brief of legibility first. Four of the five versions come on a steel H-shaped bracelet with a tool-free easy-link adjustment, and water resistance is 100 metres across the range.

Five Dials to Choose From
- Black (CDB2110.BA0054): a black opalin dial with red chronograph hands and markings.
- Blue (CDB2111.BA0054): a blue sunray dial with silver counters and a matching blue ceramic bezel.
- Blue on leather (CDB2111.FC8378): the same blue dial on a perforated brown calfskin strap.
- Green (CDB2112.BA0054): a green sunray dial with silver counters.
- Silver panda (CDB2113.BA0054): a silver dial with black counters and a black ceramic bezel.

The Movement and the Price
Every version runs on TAG Heuer's in-house automatic Calibre TH20-00, an evolution of the Heuer 02. It's a column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, beating at 4Hz with an 80-hour power reserve, enough to sit in a drawer over the weekend and still be running on Monday. You can see it through the sapphire case back. UK prices are £5,500 on the bracelet and £5,300 on the leather strap.

Final Thoughts
The new Carrera Chronograph Sport feels like TAG Heuer listening to its own history: a smaller case, clearer numerals and a proper in-house chronograph movement, all in service of Jack Heuer's 1963 idea of a watch you can read at speed. And if you'd rather own a piece that has already lived a little, the vault is a great place to start.
