Hamilton Revives the 1926 American Classic Cushion, and the Hand-Wound Vintage Watches in Our Vault

Hamilton has gone back to the 1920s. On 1 October 2026 the brand relaunched the American Classic Cushion, a collection of hand-wound watches inspired by its Cushion Plain and Cushion Engraved models of 1926. Small, slim and unashamedly Art Deco, it's one of the most vintage-minded releases of the autumn. Here's what's new, what it costs in the UK, and the hand-wound and shaped vintage pieces in our vault that share the same spirit.

Shaped by an Era

Hamilton first introduced cushion-shaped watches more than a century ago, at a time when the wristwatch was becoming both a practical tool and an expression of personal style. The Cushion Plain and Cushion Engraved of 1926 were products of the Art Deco years, with their geometric forms, balanced symmetry and architectural proportions. Hamilton calls the new collection "Shaped by an Era", and it draws directly on those originals rather than loosely borrowing from them.

The cushion itself is the star: a case that sits somewhere between a square and a circle, with softly rounded sides. It wears with real presence on the wrist without needing to be big, which is exactly why shaped watches from the 1920s and 1930s are still sought after today.

Small Sizes, Proper Vintage Proportions

The new Cushion comes in two sizes, 30mm and 34mm. That's small by modern standards and very much the point. Hamilton says the collection responds to growing interest in vintage watches and smaller formats, and the numbers back it up. The 34mm gold-tone model, reference H36139520, is just 8.1mm thick with a 38mm lug-to-lug length, so it slips under a cuff as easily as a 1920s original would have.

There's plenty of variety across the collection. You can choose between steel and yellow-gold PVD, plain or engraved cases, and Arabic or Roman numerals. Dial finishes run from sandblasted textures to enamel-style and sunburst surfaces, and every model has a small seconds display at six o'clock.

The H-42: A Hand-Wound Heart

At the centre of the collection is Hamilton's new H-42 hand-wound calibre. It's based on the ETA 7001, a movement descended from the Peseux 7001 introduced in the 1970s and known for its very slim build. That slimness is what lets Hamilton keep the proportions of the 1926 design.

The H-42 has been brought up to date with a Nivachron balance spring, which helps resist magnetism, and a power reserve extended to 57 hours. On the 34mm model you also get a sapphire crystal, an open caseback to watch the movement at work, Super-LumiNova and 50m water resistance.

Price and Availability

On Hamilton's UK site the American Classic Cushion Mechanical is priced at £935 in steel and £1,040 in gold-tone PVD, in both the 30mm and 34mm sizes.

The Vintage Originals in Our Vault

The new Cushion is a modern take on something we see every week: small, hand-wound watches from a time when a watch was something you wound each morning. If the Hamilton has caught your eye, these pieces from our vault have the same old-school charm for a fraction of the price.

Every piece is checked by our in-house specialists before it's listed.

Final Thoughts

The American Classic Cushion shows how strongly vintage design is shaping new watches in 2026. Hamilton hasn't just made a retro-looking watch; it's kept the small size, the slim profile and the hand-wound movement that made the 1926 originals special. If you'd rather own the real vintage thing, the vault is open.
