Cartier Santos Galbée: The Aviation Watch That Became a Steel Icon

Some watches are famous for going to the Moon or to the bottom of the sea. The Cartier Santos is famous for something even more basic: it helped put the watch on the wrist in the first place. More than a century later, its 1980s and 1990s incarnation, the Santos Galbée, is one of the most recognisable and wearable luxury watches you can buy on the vintage market.

1904: A Watch for a Pilot

The story starts in Paris in 1904. Louis Cartier was friends with Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer who was famous for flying his machines over the city. Santos-Dumont needed a way to check the time in the air without letting go of the controls to dig out a pocket watch. Cartier's answer was a square wristwatch, with the strap built into the case, designed to be worn on the wrist.

It's widely seen as one of the first men's wristwatches ever made, and certainly one of the first pilot's watches. Cartier put the Santos on sale to the public in 1911, mostly in gold and platinum, for a very small and very wealthy clientele.

1978: Cartier Goes Steel

For decades the Santos stayed a precious-metal watch. That changed in 1978, when Cartier, then led by Alain-Dominique Perrin, relaunched it as the Santos de Cartier. The big idea was to make it in steel, something Cartier had never done before, and to put it on an integrated metal bracelet in the spirit of the new luxury sports watches of the 1970s.

The exposed screws on the bezel, a nod to the 1904 original, became the watch's signature, and Cartier repeated them across every link of the bracelet. The two-tone steel-and-gold version was a huge hit, followed by all-steel models that made the Santos even more popular. It was so popular, in fact, that it became one of the most copied watches of the 1980s.

1987: Enter the Galbée

In 1987 Cartier gave the Santos its first real redesign. The original square-edged case (often called the Santos Carrée) was replaced by the Santos Galbée. "Galbée" is French for curved or shapely, and that's exactly what changed: the case lost its boxy lines and picked up soft, wrist-hugging curves, and the bracelet links became less angular to match.

The Galbée was made in quartz and automatic versions and in several sizes, and it stayed in the catalogue for nearly two decades until it was phased out in the mid-2000s, around the time of the centenary Santos 100. The modern Santos de Cartier relaunched in 2018 and has been one of the most wanted steel watches around ever since, which has only shone more light on the vintage Galbée.

Why a Vintage Santos Galbée Is Worth Owning

  • The heritage: you're wearing a direct descendant of one of the very first wristwatches, with the 1904 screws still front and centre.
  • The design: a square case, Roman numerals and blued hands look sharp with a suit, but the steel bracelet is just as at home with a T-shirt.
  • The comfort: the curved Galbée case and bracelet were designed to sit close to the wrist, so it wears neatly every day.
  • The practicality: a quartz Galbée is a grab-and-go Cartier with a handy date, no winding required.
